Welcome to the Cherry Valley Bookstore, we are an independent bookstore located at 81 Alden Street in historic Cherry Valley, New York. We specialize in used and antiquarian books. With more than 15,000 volumes, our collection is expansive and quite eclectic — ranging from New York history to vintage mystery.

The Cherry Valley Bookstore, formerly Clough’s Bookshop, has been operating as an independent bookstore at the same location in historic Cherry Valley for more than 20 years.

The new owners, Bill & Lynne Compton, purchased the store in June 2019 and pledge to keep it the same quaint space filled with an eclectic collection of fiction, poetry, drama, and non-fiction that its patrons have become accustomed to over the years. Our selection of books date from the early 19th century to the present and covers nearly every genre imaginable. If we don’t have it, we will try to find it for you.

Currently, we have an extensive selection of children’s books, including classics, vintage book series, and many favorites that have been enjoyed for generations.

Our Sci-Fi section is out of this world. We have a large selection of hardcover and paperback science fiction, including many collectible paperbacks for the enthusiast.

Mysteries and thrillers abound. We have enough whodunits to keep you intrigued for years to come.

About

A bookstore steeped in history.

The little red building at 81 Alden Street in Cherry Valley, NY has quite a history. The building may date to the late 18th century, but we know that in 1840 it was Amos Swan’s cabinet shop. Here, Swan built cabinetry, melodeons, and served as the local undertaker. The shop also served as the local telegraph office.

Swan was friends with Samuel Morse, whose family owned a summer home nearby. Morse used the telegraph office to test Morse code in the early days of its development.

At one point, the shop was a tea room, and in the 1940s it was a dress shop. In the 1960’s through the 1990’s it was a summer home for poets and jazz musicians escaping the heat of the city, but choosing Cherry Valley over the hustle and bustle of Saratoga.

Since the mid-90’s it has been a shop specializing in used and antiquarian books. We are proud to maintain that tradition.

Bill & Lynne Compton

Bill & Lynne Compton are the new owners of the Cherry Valley Bookstore. Lynne holds a Master of Art History degree from Tulane University in New Orleans; and Bill has a Masters of Urban and Regional Planning degree from the University of New Orleans. They purchased the bookstore in June and renamed it the Cherry Valley Bookstore. Prior to moving to Upstate New York, they lived in Bristol, RI where Bill was the Town Planner in nearby Tiverton. Bill’s 25-year career in urban planning has taken them from New Orleans, where they met, to Coastal Florida and Coastal Georgia, Boston, and the Berkshires.

They are enjoying the challenge of being small business owners - especially meeting people and having interesting conversations. The work is not without its challenges. Since acquiring the bookstore, they’ve had a new roof put on the building and continue to trace and fix leaks. Books are being cleaned and organized. The New York History, Children’s Books, Science Fiction, Mysteries & Thrillers, and Westerns have all been organized. The store also offers and extensive selection from the Everyman’s Library and Modern Library Series. We love it when someone comes in and asks for a certain book and we can put a copy in their hands.
